‘Out of the Box’ FBi radio, New Year’s Eve, 2009
Tuesday, January 5th, 2010On New Year’s Eve Sydney’s FBi radio invited me in to the studio as guest programmer on ‘Out of the box’. I was pretty darned excited! The show has always been a favourite. Basically, you show up with an hour’s worth of music to play. You chat with the host about what you do and talk about why you dig the songs.
Here’s the show.

Easier said than done. The evening prior I started to make my playlist. It’s not really an hour – more like 40 mins once you factor in promos and chats. My preliminary playlist numbered 139 songs. I narrowed that to 52. Some freakishly hard decision-making ensued at which point I narrowed it to the final 14, eleven of which got played. Yep, nearly 40 songs bit the dust. Culled for no particular reason. I was too fat, sleepy and filled with champagne from my Christmas break to apply a sensible theme to my selection. ‘Stuff I like a lot’ was about all I could manage.
One of those 11 songs was Massappeal! I have always wanted to play Massappeal on radio!
The show was hosted by Christina Marks, 17-years-old, beautiful, charming and a big fan of one of my selections, ‘Highway Song’ by Iggy Pop. We discovered that in advance, whilst drinking tea and waiting for Stephen Ferris to wrap up his show and, as a result, traipsed in feeling pretty much at ease with each other. She’s also a mountains chick and daughter of the wonderful, equally stunning Mary Marks. That helped too!
Oh and one last thing. If anything I say seems improbable it probably is. I come from a long line of exaggerators.

*** Had to end it there but I had the following three in reserve. Course, Godflesh would have been Jesu but Jesu songs are all more than 7 minutes long. Just for the record, the entire playlist was influenced by not wanting to choose tracks that were too long ***

My Heart (2:56) Castanets Texas Rose, The Thaw & The Beats
Spring Heeled Jack Flies Tonight (3:11) Tim Hecker Harmony In Ultraviolet
