A curious thing happens when you “make it” in the arts. It seems to outsiders as if it’s always been thus: a mysterious line is crossed. It’s hard to imagine established names – icons, to some – like designer Jenny Kee, actress Robyn Nevin, and artist Brett Whiteley as young creatives feeling their way forward.

The road rolls before us like a miracle of faith as our car spears its way through the fog. Something akin to muscle memory prompts me to turn left off the Great Western Highway, through the dense mist that shrouds the road, to reach my old local, Hotel Gearin in Katoomba.

Perth band Kill Devil Hills infect those who see them play with a hankering to do it again. They’ve got “it”, live. Presumably a considerable relief for any band, because “it” is impossible to construct.
Last year’s LP, ‘Man, You Should Explode’, is the most multi-textured and compelling of the Kill Devil Hills’ releases to date. Described as “boozy, bad-assed rock and roll” in Rolling Stone magazine, it’s actually the quieter, more stripped-back moments that make it brilliant – if a little menacing.
